So where should you stay in Sardinia?
Planning a holiday to Sardinia but struggling to decide where to stay?
I’m here to help. I grew up in the Southeast of Sardinia and have travelled the island, head to toe – and in my opinion, wherever you visit you can’t go wrong on this Mediterranean gem. In all corners of Sardinia, you’ll be met with world-class beaches, rugged mountains, mouthwatering food and charming towns (including a famous ‘blue zone’ where it’s common to live for 100 years and more).
A trip to Sardinia can be many things, depending on your tastes. For some, a week spent relaxing on the soft white sands and crystal-clear waters in Costa Smeralda is a vision of paradise. Others might prefer adventurous hiking in Europe’s deepest gorge Su Gorropu, whilst foodies (myself included) get their kicks from indulging in local wines, cheeses, roasted meets and delicious pasta specialities – unfortunately returning home with a few extra kilos in the process.
The truth is that there is a Sardinia for all tastes, whatever your preferences. This guide will give you an excellent general overview of some must-see areas, activities, and hotels to help you plan your perfect trip.
Sardinia Regions Overview
Sardinia is the second largest island in Italy after Sicily, this means that travelling from North to South (by car usually, as public transport is far from reliable) can take 4-5 hours. Therefore, plan your trip to specific areas, rather than tackling the whole island in one go.
If you’re not taking a ferry from mainland Italy, you’ll likely fly into one of these airports:
- Cagliari (South Sardinia)
- Olbia (Northeast Sardinia)
- Alghero (Northwest Sardinia)

Which Area is Best to Stay in?
Sardinia’s regions each have their distinct character. For example, Cagliari’s colourful streets offer a mix of historic charm with a cosmopolitan vibe, while Olbia, in the northeast, has a more upmarket, luxury and tourist-focused feel.
To help you decide where to stay, below are five recommended areas to visit in Sardinia, as well as what to do there and where to stay.
Cagliari – South Sardinia
Overview of Cagliari
Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia and home to around 150,000 people is an eclectic hub of history, food, and seaside beauty.
If you’re dreaming of beautiful beaches, Cagliari based on the South coast, is spoilt for choice. Not only is it a fantastic starting point to reach the stunning South-East or South-West coast, but the nearby spots of Poetto, Calamosca and Cala Fighera are some of the best city beaches you’ll find anywhere in Europe.
Cagliari is also blessed with a vibrant restaurant scene and nightlife, perfect for foodies and party people. For those interested in a cultural experience, the capital offers many ancient landmarks, including Roman ruins, a 13th-century Cathedral, an archaeological museum, as well as sweeping panoramic views across the city looking over the Mediterranean.
It’s worth noting that the heat can be intense in the city during the middle of the summer, and many locals escape to the seaside for this very reason. If you are planning to stay in Cagliari in July & August it’s recommended to have access to a nearby beach, a swimming pool and air conditioning. Or even better – all three.
Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in Cagliari
If history is what you are after, staying near the Castello district is ideal, as it’s perched high above the city and offers stunning sea views, as well as ancient landmarks at your doorstep. Some of the top attractions include the Cagliari Cathedral, the Elephant Tower (Torre dell’Elefante) and Bastion Saint Remy.
The Marina area is perfect for those who want to be right in the action. It’s close to most of the restaurants and bars and avoids the steep, tiring treks up the hills of Castello.
For a more relaxed seaside vibe, Poetto beach is a popular spot for families and beach lovers. It’s one of Europe’s longest beaches and offers plenty of space, water sports and a lively atmosphere at night – with bars and restaurants dotted by the sea-front.

Those on a budget should head to Baco B&B, which offers a clean, cosy, affordable option close to the heart of the city.
For a luxurious experience, the 4-star Hotel Regina Margherita offers a plush stay as well as stunning panoramic views of the Gulf of Cagliari.
Families and couples should consider Hotel Nautilus, located near Poetto Beach, perfect for a fun seaside escape.
Olbia – Northeast Sardinia
Overview of Olbia
Olbia is one of Sardinia’s three entry points by air, providing easy access to the island’s stunning northeastern coast. Although Olbia may not have the same cultural charm as other Sardinian cities, it’s an excellent starting point to explore Northern Sardinia’s breathtaking beaches and bubbly coastal towns.
If convenience, beautiful beaches and a hassle-free holiday are what you are after, then Olbia is a good shout – everything you could wish for is here. One caveat though- Olbia can be more expensive as it tends to attract a VIP crowd, so budget accordingly, especially in the peak summer months.
Best Areas Near Olbia’s Beaches
Beyond the well-known Costa Smeralda, the popular Northeastern coast which we explore further below, Olbia’s region is home to incredible beaches that cater to all types of travellers.
Golfo Aranci: Just a short drive from Olbia, the picturesque towns here have some of the most transparent blue waters you will ever see, sandy beaches, and a more chilled atmosphere than Costa Smeralda. The beaches of Cala Moresca and Spiaggia Bianca are among the best in the area, with stunning landscapes and excellent snorkelling opportunities.
San Teodoro: Located south of Olbia, San Teodoro is famous for its lively nightlife and spectacular beaches, such as La Cinta Beach, known for its fluffy white sand and shallow turquoise waters, ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts.
Porto San Paolo: This charming village, just 20 minutes from Olbia, is your gateway to the stunning and much-photographed Tavolara Island, a marine-protected area with excellent diving and hiking opportunities. Spiaggia di Porto Istana is nearby, a pristine beach perfect for relaxing in peace.
One of the World’s Blue Zones – Sardinia is home to one of the world’s five “Blue Zones,” where people live significantly longer than average. The island has a high concentration of centenarians, partly due to its Mediterranean diet, active lifestyle, and strong social connections.
