According to renthop.com, the average price for a studio in the Big Apple was quoted at $3,500 USD per month in May 2024, an increase of over 50%! compared to 3 years ago. Pretty nuts! So New York is even a more expensive city, however, can you still live in New York City under $1000?

And the answer is: maybe or…almost. No trick answer, I promise. The truth is…there are some good options for just $1,000 or slightly above in shared flats or coliving spaces.

I’ve done deep research in the past week to truly find out if there really are cheap options to live in New York, and I came up with the absolute best value for money for a decent place in this magnificent city.

So let’s have a look where you can live for around $1,000 USD in the City That Never Sleeps.

Big cities can be hard to settle in and, even more so, expensive. They are busy and can be “cold” , intimidating and hectic for people who have never lived in a huge metropolis.

According to a specialised real estate website, New York City is the #9 most expensive large city in the U.S., with a median rent of $2,360. Citywide, the median rent currently stands at $2,252 for a 1-bedroom apartment and $2,375 for a 2-bedroom. For comparison, the median rent across the nation as a whole is $1,233 for a 1-bedroom, $1,389 for a 2-bedroom, and $1,404 overall.

Having said this, yes, there are some hidden gems in the New York real estate market that you can rent for around 1000 USD per month. They are usually rooms in coliving spaces or in shared flats, but with decent sizes, even common spaces, nice kitchens, and some facilities. One thing to keep in mind is that for this price, in some instances, you might have to live with a roommate or more.
