Affordable Coliving in NYC: Top Options Under $1000
Coliving spaces in New York - NYC
Nearly 9 million people call New York City home, a city where you could spend a lifetime getting to know this much-mythologized American city.Â
Millions are drawn to it; some never leave it. Monumental, artistic, cultural, commercial, and cosmopolitan. You’ll never be bored here; however, the price of accommodation in New York City has skyrocketed in the past few years due to inflation and more talent moving into it.Â
According to renthop.com, the average price for a studio in the Big Apple was quoted at $3,500 USD per month in May 2024, an increase of over 50%! compared to 3 years ago. Pretty nuts! So New York is even a more expensive city, however, can you still live in New York City under $1000?Â
And the answer is: maybe or…almost. No trick answer, I promise. The truth is…there are some good options for just $1,000 or slightly above in shared flats or coliving spaces.
I’ve done deep research in the past week to truly find out if there really are cheap options to live in New York, and I came up with the absolute best value for money for a decent place in this magnificent city.
So let’s have a look where you can live for around $1,000 USD in the City That Never Sleeps.
Why Choosing Coliving in New York City?
Big cities can be hard to settle in and, even more so, expensive. They are busy and can be “cold” , intimidating and hectic for people who have never lived in a huge metropolis.
Usually, when moving to a city like New York or London, you leave behind friends and family, and it’s hard to see them often. The cool part about joining a coliving community is that it’s the perfect place to make new friends or find new business partners while enjoying this fantastic city.
Another good reason is that it’s very convenient to live in an arrangement like this because it’s hassle free. Most of the time, the bills are included, and even a cleaning service is provided. Rooms come fully furnished, and many coliving spaces have nice living rooms, terraces, and even gyms.
Also, another positive is that you can choose how long you want to stay, whether it’s a one, three-, six or twelve-month contract. Obviously, the longer the period, the cheaper the contract.
Coliving spaces are a smooth introduction into big cities for professionals who are focus on their careers and want to have a turnkey solution for their accommodation, without too many strings attached.
Top Affordable and Cheap Coliving Spaces in NYC Under $1000 or Around

What is Coliving?
Coliving spaces are a new trend amongst young professionals who want to live in big cities, not necessarily on the budget, and share living spaces, such as apartments or houses, to create a sense of community, affordability, and convenience. It is especially popular among young expats, digital nomads, and those seeking a more social and collaborative living environment.
In a coliving setup, neighbours typically have their own private bedrooms, (which can be a studio, one bed, or even two bedroom) but share common areas like kitchens, living rooms, and sometimes even bathrooms. Some of them have even better facilities, like saunas, swimming pools, playrooms, cinemas, and so on. For example, have a look at this stunning place in London, UK. Some people associate coliving with a luxury dorm for grownups (no glamorising intended), and that’s not too far from the truth.
This type of accommodation is designed to provide a balance between personal space and communal living, making it easier for people to connect, share experiences, and support each other. A lot of people, like myself, prefer it to meet new people and also network. Some of these spaces organize shared meals, parties, and even comedy shows for their tenants, which are great ways to socialise and have a great time.

Finding the Best Coliving Apartments in NYC
New York already offers a lot of coliving spaces for young people and mature professionals alike. From the Upper East Side to Bushwick, to Long Island City, to Murray Hill, millennials and Gen-Zs have their choice of spaces according to their budget.
As we’ve seen in this blog post, the options and areas are many, but how do you find the right one for you?
Here are some things to keep in mind before booking one:
1. Search for a house in the area where you want to live on your price leve.
- How much are you willing to spend on this house?
- What amenities do you need, and what can you do without?
- What kind of house do you want to live in?
- Are you willing to live with a roommate?
- Do you need a co-working space too?
- Would a studio meet your needs?
- Where do you want to live? Uptown, midtown, or downtown?
- What kind of community are you looking for? Artists or tech entrepreneurs?
- Is the company creating networking events for you?
2. Apply
Most coliving websites require you to send in an application and wait for it to get approved. For others, you just fill out a form and get the offer after a short while. Also, keep in mind that they will ask you for a deposit, papers to prove that you can live in the US for that period of time, and a few other details.Â
3. Move in
When you get your offer and pay your deposit, the next thing is to move in and start enjoying the great benefits of coliving.
Usually, these shared properties come with supplies, great design and fun common spaces like pool table, gyms and so on.
With SharedEasy, you are always sure to get value for your money. SharedEasy coliving spaces can also be rented by travelers who crave authentic human experiences wherever their travels take them. They want to enjoy the cuisine and the language, and get a feel for the style of each new city they visit. They crave fun and love to have a good time filling their days with as many activities as they can.
Benefits of Furnished Coliving Spaces
There are plenty of benefits to choosing a coliving space over a traditional flat share.Â
One reason is the amenities typically included with coliving spaces which include laundry, kitchens, swimming pools, workspaces, access to gyms and other health clubs, leisure areas, and spas. Another huge advantage is that all the utilities and WiFi are usually included in the rental amount, so you don’t have to run around and subscribe to all the utility providers. Some spaces offer access to house cleaning services, and occasionally cater parties, depending on the community.
Co-living sounds like an answer to everything you’ve ever asked about homes, neighborhoods, or life as a digital nomad.
