Ask any person what comes to mind when asked about Indonesia, and they will tell you Bali, the most beautiful place in the world. This beautiful island has been a tourist destination and digital nomad hub for more than 10 years now. However, it seems “cracks have started to appear in paradise. Overcrowding, pollution, and security issues are pushing people out of this beautiful region of Asia, according to some influencers.

Luckily, Indonesia has more than Bali to offer. Its vast archipelago of 17,500 islands has more hidden gems that could lure some of the nomads back.

One hidden gem in the country is called Lembeh Island. This tranquil paradise, situated near Bitung City in the Sulawesi region, wants to take advantage of Bali’s fall and is set to become the country’s first digital nomad village. The Bitung local government has unveiled an enticing offer for digital nomads, providing free accommodation in exchange for their presence. However, there’s a catch – it’s all part of a one-month pilot program launching in September 2023.

Bitung City, with its strategic location and close proximity to stunning beaches, natural parks, exotic wildlife, breathtaking diving reefs, and delectable seafood, has become an increasingly attractive destination for nomadic individuals seeking adventure and inspiration. With just a short boat ride, the coast of Bitung City unveils the untouched beauty of the “Lembeh Strait” and its collection of pristine beaches.

One of the key benefits for digital nomads considering Bitung City is its convenient accessibility. The city is a mere 20-minute drive from the major Manado airport, significantly reducing travel time to reach this remote and captivating area. In addition, Bitung City provides safe and comfortable accommodation options for digital nomads, offering extremely low-cost living situations with essential amenities like reliable Wi-Fi and easy access to nature and various island activities.Mayor Maurits Mantiri hopes that the presence of digital nomads will not only contribute to the vibrant atmosphere of the city but also boost the local economy.

The mayor has approved workshops, aiming to facilitate an intellectual transfer of digital knowledge from the nomads to the local population. Moreover, digital nomads residing in Bitung City will have the opportunity to make social contributions through voluntary work, should they wish to give back to the community.

The pilot program invites 100 digital nomads to become ambassadors for Bitung City. The government specifically seeks individuals skilled in storytelling, particularly YouTubers, Instagrammers, and TikTokers, to capture and share the essence of their experience. These lucky nomads will be accommodated in a luxurious four-star resort, mere steps away from the stunning beaches that surround Bitung City.

The program has minimal requirements in terms of social media followers, with the primary condition being that applicants must be 21 years of age or older and respectful of Indonesian culture. To ensure a suitable fit, each ambassador will undergo a video interview, and successful candidates will soon receive their official invitations.

To ensure a suitable fit, every ambassador will undergo a video interview as part of the selection process. If chosen, they will receive an exclusive invitation to participate in the pilot program. Interested individuals can apply via the official website, which has already received over 500 applications through partnerships with nomad communities in Bali.
